What is a concussion? (Mild traumatic brain injury – MTBI)
According to the latest international consensus, a concussion is a head injury caused by a direct impact to the head, neck or body. This impact transmits an impulsive force to the brain and may occur during sports, physical activity or another traumatic event.
This trauma triggers a cascade of metabolic and neurotransmitter reactions, with possible axonal damage, changes in blood flow and inflammation affecting the brain. Signs and symptoms may appear immediately, or develop gradually over the first few hours. Most concussions resolve within 20 days on average, but some can cause persistent symptoms.
In sport, concussion manifests itself through a graduated series of signs and symptoms, which may or may not include loss of consciousness.
A practical guide to better management
The aim of this article is to provide you with concrete tools to optimize the management of a concussion. Here’s a link to a recent pamphlet developed by INESSS that summarizes the essential steps to follow: INESSS – Guide TCCL
The chiropractor: an ally in concussion management
Concussion management is often associated with doctors, physiotherapists and neuropsychologists. But did you know that chiropractors are also trained to assess, diagnose and treat this condition?
Chiropractors with an interest in the care of athletes are particularly qualified to support concussion patients. Contact your nearest clinic to find out if your chiropractor offers this service!
When should you consult (or reconsult) a healthcare professional?
It is essential to consult a healthcare professional, such as a chiropractor or physiotherapist, in the following situations:
After a direct impact to the head, neck or body, if you don’t have quick access to a doctor.
If your condition deteriorates or does not significantly improve within two weeks of diagnosis.
If you find it difficult to progress through the stages of recovery (e.g. difficulty in moving on to the next stage after several attempts).
If you are very worried about your symptoms.
If symptoms persist after one month and impact your daily activities.
Conclusion
Concussion is an injury not to be taken lightly. Prompt assessment and appropriate management promote optimal recovery and reduce the risk of complications. By consulting a qualified professional, such as a chiropractor or physiotherapist, you maximize your chances of a full recovery.
