Do you experience numbness, tingling or a burning sensation in your hands or wrists? You could be suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome.
What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway in the wrist. It contains the median nerve and the tendons that connect the forearm muscles to the hand. The word “carpal” refers to the wrist region. This tunnel plays an essential role in transmitting movements and sensations to the hand.
How does carpal tunnel syndrome occur?
When the muscles of the hand are used excessively or repeatedly, the tendons can become inflamed. This is often the case for people who work long hours at a computer or perform repetitive movements.
This inflammation takes up more space in the carpal tunnel. As a result, the median nerve can become compressed.
It is this compression that causes symptoms such as :
- Numbness
- Tingling
- Muscle weakness
- Burning sensation
These signs occur mainly in the fingers innervated by the median nerve, such as the thumb, index and middle fingers. Sometimes only one hand is affected, but both can be affected.
Who’s at risk?
Carpal tunnel syndrome most often affects people between the ages of 50 and 75. Women may be more at risk than men.
Certain factors increase the likelihood of developing this syndrome, including :
- Pregnancy
- Professions involving repetitive movements (hairdressers, factory operators, etc.)
- Prolonged computer work
What can chiropractic do?
Chiropractic can play an important role in the evaluation and treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome.
During a consultation, your chiropractor will ask targeted questions and perform physical tests. These examinations will help confirm whether your symptoms are related to carpal tunnel… or to some other cause. A personalized care plan will then be put in place.
This may include :
- Chiropractic adjustments
- Muscle or joint therapy
- Postural or strengthening exercises
- Advice on preventing recurrences
If the cause of your symptoms is not carpal tunnel, your chiropractor will be able to suggest a plan adapted to your condition.
