Procrastination is something we all face on a daily basis. Whether it’s household chores, returning phone calls, running errands or getting into shape, procrastination can quickly set in and hinder our progress.
This mechanism amplifies stress and anxiety, creating a growing sense of guilt and feeding perfectionism. Caught in this vicious cycle, we end up feeling permanently dissatisfied, which affects our self-esteem.
How can we overcome procrastination?
The key to overcoming procrastination is to take action without waiting for everything to be perfect. Even a small step, however imperfect, is a step forward.
Don’t wait for the perfect moment or for a spontaneous burst of motivation: motivation will come by getting moving. Start your day with a simple task that’s easy to accomplish. Having ticked the first box on your list will boost your motivation and encourage you to keep going.
Set SMART goals
Setting clear, well-defined goals is an essential key to combating procrastination. The SMART method helps you set effective goals:
- S: Specific – The objective must be clear and adapted to your situation.
- M: Measurable – It must be quantifiable so you can track your progress.
- A: Attainable – A motivating but realistic objective.
- R: Realistic – In line with your abilities and environment.
- T: Temporally defined – Set a deadline for reaching your goal.
Example: “I want to be able to do a set of 10 knee push-ups in 4 weeks.”
SMART goals increase your chances of success and boost your motivation.
