Vestibular Rehabilitation
Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialization in physiotherapy that treats the vestibular system of the inner ear. This system is responsible for sending signals to our brain about where our head is in space, when it is not functioning optimally it can cause symptoms of dizziness, vertigo, or decreased balance. The role of the physiotherapist is to complete an evaluation of the different aspects that are affected (balance, eye movements, head position changes) in order to establish a treatment plan with the goal of eliminating patient’s symptoms and return to normal daily functioning.
What conditions can be treated with vestibular rehabilitation?
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
- After a neuronitis/labyrinthitis (inner ear infection)
- Symptoms of dizziness or vertigo
- Decreased balance or feeling of unsteadiness
- Persistent postural perceptual dizziness (3PD)
- Vestibular migraine
- Meniere’s disease
- Post-trauma (labyrinth contusion/destruction)
- Peri lymphatic fistula
- Cervicogenic dizziness (dizziness with associated neck pain)
- Concussion and persistent post concussion syndrome
What does an evaluation consist of in vestibular rehabilitation?
The physiotherapist will ask questions related to your health and the symptoms you have been experiencing. The physical testing includes tests for eye movement function, balance, and positional provocation maneuvers. These tests will help identify the origin of the symptoms and guide the treatment plan. Treatment starts the same day as the evaluation and may include visual exercises, balance exercises, repositioning maneuvers, or manual therapy.
What does a treatment look like in vestibular rehabilitation?
Follow-up treatments (30 mins) include a selection or combination of exercises progressions, maneuvers, or manual therapy.
