Jaw disorders (temporomandibular joint)
Did you know that the jaw is a joint like any other? It goes without saying that it can be a possible source of pain. Indeed, a problem with the jaw can result in headaches in the temporal region (side of the head) or occipital region (back of the head), pain in the face and/or at the base of the neck. The role of the physiotherapist is to assess the jaw as soon as these symptoms appear. The jaw should also be evaluated if neck pain is present following a car accident.

What does a physical therapy jaw evaluation look like?
The physiotherapist will ask questions related to your health and the symptoms you have been experiencing. Physical tests include an assessment of your posture, measurements of mouth opening and excursion and tongue range of motion, the level of tone in your muscles surrounding the jaw and checking for possible stiffness or tenderness in the joint. Treatment begins the same day as the evaluation and may include recommendations for daily habits, muscle rehabilitation exercises, manual therapy, and other physiotherapy modalities.
What are jaw therapy treatments like?
Follow-up treatments (30 mins) include a selection or combination of exercise progressions, maneuvers, or manual therapy.
