Eating disorders

Eating disorders are complex conditions that can affect a person’s relationship with food, weight, and body image. They can have significant impacts on both physical and psychological health.

Some of the most well-known eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. Other eating-related difficulties can also affect a person’s relationship with food, even when an eating disorder is not present or diagnosed.

Different Types of Eating Disorders

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by significant food restriction. This may be accompanied by compensatory behaviors, such as excessive exercise, vomiting, or laxative use. This disorder can have consequences for both physical and psychological health. It may be associated with anxiety and social isolation, as well as various physical concerns such as constipation, anemia, and decreased bone health.

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is characterized by episodes of binge eating during which a person may consume a large amount of food rapidly while experiencing a sense of loss of control. These episodes may be followed by compensatory behaviors, such as fasting, vomiting, or excessive exercise. Bulimia nervosa can affect both physical and psychological health and may be associated with difficult emotions, anxiety, or depression. It can also lead to various physical consequences, including dental and gastrointestinal problems.

Binge-Eating Disorder

Binge-eating disorder is characterized by episodes of binge eating accompanied by a sense of loss of control, without compensatory behaviors. These episodes may be associated with feelings of guilt or isolation and may be accompanied by physical symptoms such as bloating, acid reflux, or abdominal pain.

Other Eating-Related Difficulties

Other eating disorders can also be addressed during consultations, including avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), pica, and rumination disorder. It is also possible to experience difficulties related to food or body image without necessarily receiving a diagnosis of an eating disorder.

Certain behaviors may indicate that your relationship with food is being affected, including not listening to your hunger and fullness cues, following very strict food rules, regularly skipping meals, using food to cope with emotions, or experiencing feelings of guilt and loss of control around eating.

Support Tailored to Your Journey

No matter where you are in your relationship with food, you do not have to go through it alone. Whether you are experiencing concerns related to food or have been diagnosed with an eating disorder, our nutritionist can support you with compassion throughout your journey.

During a nutritional assessment, your eating habits, relationship with food, and symptoms will be explored to better understand your situation. Together, you can then develop an action plan tailored to your needs. This may include addressing nutritional deficiencies when present, managing certain symptoms, and gradually working toward a healthier relationship with food.

At ABC Health Clinic, you remain at the heart of your care journey. Your support is tailored to your situation and your pace, with the goal of supporting you every step of the way.
