Social work
What role do social workers play?
They provide concrete help to people facing difficult social realities such as mental health, addiction, stress management and parenting support, to name but a few.
How do social workers do it?
By enabling people to find their own solutions to these difficulties. The role of social workers is to accompany and help individuals resolve or prevent personal, family or social problems. They often work with the individual and his or her family, while collaborating with other professionals such as doctors, physiotherapists or occupational therapists.
Social workers are trained to understand and take into account the way society works and the problems it faces, as well as the various human behaviors that have a major impact on the person seeking help. The strength of social workers lies in their ability to analyze complicated social situations and contexts, and to build adapted models of assistance. They help you identify the source of stress or difficulties, strengthen your coping skills and find effective solutions to your problems.
What can I expect from a meeting with a social worker?
Meetings usually last 50 minutes, with the frequency determined by the social worker and the patient. At the first meeting, the professional asks you questions to find out more about your situation and what you’d like to do next.
Then, you explore the results you’re looking for and how to know if there’s improvement. Together, you choose one or more areas to work on that are priorities for you. Some exercises to do at home may be recommended, or you may be referred to other resources in the community.
