High blood pressure

High blood pressure is characterized by an abnormal elevation in the pressure of blood circulating in the arteries. Although this condition usually does not cause symptoms in affected individuals, it is still important to manage it as it increases the risk of other cardiovascular conditions, such as heart failure.

Diet and lifestyle habits play a key role in high blood pressure. Sedentary behavior, excessive consumption of certain nutrients like sodium, and high body weight can all contribute to its development. Fortunately, changing these habits can also help lower blood pressure. For example, in individuals with higher body weight, weight loss through improved dietary habits can reduce blood pressure. If the condition is not severe, lifestyle changes may help you avoid medication. If you are already taking medications for high blood pressure, lifestyle changes are still relevant!

During your initial assessment, you and your registered dietitian can identify which habits or aspects of your diet may contribute to your hypertension and can be modified. You can then plan these changes by establishing a personalized action plan. If you were considering starting the DASH diet or the Mediterranean diet, your registered dietitian can also help determine if they are suitable for you and assist you in implementing them. During follow-up appointments, you will work collaboratively with your registered dietitian to gradually change your eating habits for good. You will also learn more about how certain nutrients affect blood pressure.
