Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by suboptimal control of blood glucose levels, the concentration of “sugar” in the blood. Low blood glucose, also known as hypoglycemia, can cause bothersome symptoms such as confusion and headaches. Chronic high blood glucose can have long-term negative effects on health, increasing the risk of kidney and heart diseases. While general principles of healthy eating, such as consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables, also apply to people living with diabetes, a more personalized approach to nutrition is necessary at every stage of the disease.

Receiving a diagnosis of pre-diabetes or diabetes can be challenging. Fortunately, your registered dietitian at ABC Health Clinic is here to support you through this period of change. At this stage, they will primarily help you understand what blood glucose is and how diet can affect it. The nutrition assessment will identify any dietary habits that may hinder your blood glucose control, while follow-ups will help you modify them. You will work together to establish target carbohydrate intake for meals and snacks, learn how to calculate the carbohydrates in your meals, and manage hypoglycemia. The goal is to empower you to independently manage this new condition.

Meeting with a registered dietitian can also be relevant for those who have been living with the disease for several years. Over time, it is common for certain healthy eating habits to fade. Reassessing your diet and setting new goals are essential for sustainable management of your diabetes and reducing the risk of the aforementioned complications.
