We often hear of mild, mild traumatic brain disorder (MTBI), moderate (ModTBI), severe TBI (STBI) and concussions. But how do we differentiate? What to do when we believe we are suffering such injury? This is what we will try to do in this blog.
The difference between all the disorders mentioned above is in the degree of severity in terms of symptoms and in the ones that are present or not. The term “concussion” is also used more often in sports circles. On the other hand, as one of our physiotherapists, Marie-Hélène, had mentioned in a blog in July 2018, there is not always an impact to the head at the source of a concussion. It can be difficult to differentiate. However, in this case, the consensus is that as soon as there is a suspicion that an athlete, regardless of his age, is the victim of a blow to the head or any other trauma:
IMMEDIATE removal from the field
The field can be a sports field, a training room or a playground.
To help you more easily identify the risks of concussions, here are the most common symptoms in this condition:
- Headaches or “pressure in the head”
- Dizziness
- Difficulty concentrating
- Nausea/vomiting
- Intolerance to light or noise
- Attitude changes or an amplification of emotions
These symptoms may not be present directly after an impact. They can take up to 48 hours to appear. An initial rest is therefore the best strategy to avoid complications.
Most chiropractors are able to recognize the signs and symptoms of a concussion. A rapid assessment is needed to begin the care protocol to help promote a faster return to intellectual and physical activity.
In case of symptoms of concussion, the chiropractor can treat the neck to help remove pressure as it is an area often involved with a concussion. Your doctor of chiropractic can also give exercises to ensure proper neurological healing. The most important thing is that your chiropractor can accompany you and guide you through the various stages of returning to school or work, sports and other activities.
