How do you get one? How can it be cured?<\/h2>\n<p>A plantar wart is a benign skin tumor. It is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and appears on the foot as a small growth of skin that reaches the superficial layer of the skin (epidermis). Here we&#8217;ll guide you through the analysis of the wart, how to prevent it and how to treat it.<\/p>\n<h2>How long can a wart stay on a surface, on my skin?<\/h2>\n<p>A wart can remain on an inert surface for several months. It has an incubation period (time between infection and symptoms) of 1-6 months. It can remain latent in the skin for up to 3 years without showing symptoms, which explains why it can recur after treatment.<\/p>\n<h2>How does this virus evolve?<\/h2>\n<p>The evolution is extremely variable. It may resolve spontaneously, remain fairly stable over several weeks or months, or proliferate gradually and extensively across the face of the foot. On the other hand, the virus is harmless. It&#8217;s important to treat it when there&#8217;s pain associated with it, to observe if it&#8217;s spreading, and to avoid transmitting it.<\/p>\n<h2>How do I know if I have a plantar wart?<\/h2>\n<p>With the naked eye, the podiatrist may have a strong suspicion of plantar warts, with typical signs such as horniness, small black dots (thrombosed capillaries) and loss of skin lines. On the other hand, observation with an episcope helps to clarify the diagnosis, since the wart may resemble a horn or other skin lesion. Variations in each person&#8217;s immune system can influence the size, duration, severity and location of warts. Warts are transmitted by direct contact, and can penetrate the skin more easily when irritated or traumatized.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What precautions can I take?<\/h2>\n<p>Plantar warts are contagious. It is therefore possible to become infected in public environments such as swimming pools, changing rooms, showers and training rooms.<\/p>\n<p>It can also be transmitted within the same family in more suitable places such as the shower. Exchanging sandals\/shoes without stockings increases the risk, and high levels of perspiration increase the likelihood of transmission.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid going barefoot<\/li>\n<li>Avoid touching the affected area (the wart could spread to hands, knees and genitals, among others).<\/li>\n<li>Change socks regularly during the day to prevent dampness<\/li>\n<li>Wash your stockings inside out with bleach<\/li>\n<li>Disinfect all surfaces that have been in contact with your feet<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s important to wear your sandals in public places!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How can I get rid of them?<\/h2>\n<p>The treatment chosen depends primarily on the level of involvement, medical history and whether the patient is pregnant or breast-feeding.
