A day turned into a week…
It is in Israel in 2010 that we must seek the origin of this day and more precisely with Ruti Karni Horowitz. The event quickly became a big hit and Ruti suggested that it become an international event to celebrate doulas all around the world. World Doula Day was born. It was quickly decided to extend it to the whole week, from March 22 to 28.
The choice of March 22
This date was chosen because March 22 corresponds to the day after the equinox, and symbolizes the return of fertility in many cultures.
World doula week
The objective of World Doula Week is to raise awareness of this profession and to give doulas around the world the means to improve the physiological, social, emotional and psychological health of women, newborns and families at the time of pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
Doulas make the difference
How ? Like that :
- 50% fewer caesareans
- Reduction of working hours by 25%
- 60% less epidural use
- 40% less use of artificial hormones
- 40% fewer instrumental deliveries (suction cups, forceps, episiotomy, etc.).
- Decreased risk of postpartum depression.
The doula also makes the difference because…
- She’ll cheer you on in the hard times
- She will suggest positions to facilitate the work
- She will offer you methods to relieve the pain.
- She will perform massages to reduce tension
- She will guide you by suggesting actions to take
- She will help the couple make decisions
- It will evaluate the positive and negative aspects of a choice
- She will offer you alternatives
- She will support you in the decisions made with the medical team
- Finally, she will ensure that your birth plan is respected.
